The Music Series at South Church, 90 Main Street, New Britain, Connecticut , announces its 2010-2011 concert schedule. The Music Series will present a fascinating 

array of concerts is this its 38th season.  All events are open to the public and will take place in the sanctuary of South Church in New Britain.   

 

David goya Gonzalez and the Latin Jazz Experience

 Sunday, October 3, 2010 - 4:00 p.m.

 

The season opens with smooth Latin jazz featuring the inimitable 

David goya Gonzalez and his ensemble of gifted young jazz musicians.  They will fill our space with an exploration of Latin Jazz, fusing the indigenous music of Puerto Rico and salsa.  A ticketed event.  All tickets:  $10

 

 A Candlelight Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

Sunday, December 19, 2010 , 4:00 p.m.

 

This beloved festival weaves together scripture and song, telling the Christmas story from prophecy to fulfillment.  Features the South Church Chancel Choir, with Richard Coffey , Choirmaster, and David Westfall , organist.  Reception follows.  Free-will donation

A Tribute to Organist Jehan Alain on the 100th Anniversary of his Birth

Sunday, February 6, 2011 – 3:00 p.m.

A three hour marathon concert features a compelling  ‘Super Bowl’ roster of favorite local organists playing the complete works of French composer, Jehan Alain, played on our magnificent Gress-Miles organ.  Reception follows!  Free-will donation   Presented in collaboration with the Greater Hartford Chapter, American Guild of Organists

 

 

The South Church Chamber Society with

pianist David Westfall and Friends

  Sunday, March 6, 2011 , 4:00 p.m.

 

Pianist and Chamber Music Society founder David Westfall has crafted a fascinating program, featuring Robert Schumann’s Andante and Variations for two pianos, two cellos, and horn, and Bela Bartok’s Sonata for two pianos and percussion.. Serbian pianist Dorian Leljak, cellist Mihai Tetel and percussionist Benjamin Toth join Mr. Westfall for a thrilling afternoon of rarely heard chamber works.  A reception follows. Free-will donation

 

Chanticleer:  Out of this World

  Sunday, April 10, 2011   –   4:00 p.m.

 

You won’t want to miss the world’s reigning male chorus,  Chanticleer, in a program titled “Out of this World.  Chanticleer is known around the world for their seamless blend and original interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, from gospel to new music.  They will extoll the sun, the moon, the earth, and the stars in this wide-ranging and engaging program.  A ticketed event.  

Tickets:  $40 Premium, $25 General, $15 Senior and Student

 

 “Strawberries and Jazz”

  Saturday, June 18, 2011 4:00 p.m./6:00 p.m

 

Our season concludes with our popular Strawberry Festival, followed by a jazz concert.  Berry treats begin at 4:00 p.m. , and the concert begins at 6:00 p.m. Jazz artists to be announced.  A perfect summer treat!  Concert is free-will donation.

 

 

SecondSundays at South

November 14, January 9, and March 13 from 12:05 p.m. to 12:35 p.m.

The popular Sunday mini-series of 30-minutes recitals continues, featuring favorite local artists.  12:05 p.m. to 12:35 p.m. -- free-will donation at all concerts.  

Followed by brunch in the parlor.                      

November 14:   The concert debut of the South Church Jubilant Ringers Handbell Choir

         January 9:                   Anthony DeDominicis, baritone

         March 13:                   Christine Laird , soprano

 

South Church is wheelchair accessible. Designated handicapped parking spaces are available on Main Street in front of the church.
