Music Series 2011-12 Season Schedule

The Music Series at South Church, 90 Main Street, New Britain,Connecticut, announces its 2011-2012 concert schedule. The Music Series will present a wonderful schedule of concerts in this its 39th season.  All events are open to the public and will take place in the sanctuary of South Church in New Britain.

The wonderful quartet Anonymous 4

Renowned for their unearthly vocal blend and virtuosic ensemble singing, the four women of Anonymous 4 combine musical, literary, and historical scholarship in their masterfully designed programs, interweaving music with poetry and narrative.  The ensemble’s award-winning recordings have sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide.  Their appearance is part of a celebratory 25th Anniversary tour.

     A Candlelight Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols

The beloved Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols includes nine Scripture lessons shared by a colorful cast of angels, shepherds, and wise men, all telling of the promise of the Messiah and the birth of Jesus.  Each reading is followed by a carol of anthem reflecting on the lesson’s message.  Features the South Church Chancel Choir, with Richard Coffey, Choirmaster, and David Westfall, organist.  A reception follows.  Free-will donation

     featuring The Colorado String Quartet and pianist David Westfall

 

In celebration of the South Church Chamber Music Society’s tenth anniversary, founding pianist David Westfall welcomes the renowned ColoradoString Quartet.  Critics have noted their “amazing mix of individual and ensemble musicianship” and their “cohesion, grace, and complete understanding of the music.”  Features Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor.  A reception follows.  Free-will donation.

     Organist David Higgs

Co-sponsored by the Greater Hartford Chapter, American Guild of Organists (AGO)

One of America’s leading concert organists, David Higgs performs extensively throughout theUnited Statesand abroad.  Critics marvel at his sense of tempo, secure finger work and mastery of imaginative and tasteful organ registration.  Mr. Higgs will work his magic with South Church’s magnificent Gress-Miles organ.  A reception follows.  Free-will donation.

Mr. Higgs will present a master class at Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford on Saturday, April 14, from 10 AM to 1 PM.

      Canticles for Choir

In a concert held at South Church, the South Church Chancel Choir joins with Hartford’s Center Church Choir for a jubilant program of choral music, including Jean Langlais’ Messe Solenelle and works by Benjamin Britten, Paul Drayton, David Jogan, C. Hubert H. Parry, Herbert Howells, Paul Mealor, Conrad Susa, and William Walton.  Features Richard Coffey and Jason Charneski, Choirmasters, and David Westfall, organist.
